12 And Absalom sent for [a]Ahithophel the Gilonite, David’s counselor, from his city Giloh, while he was offering sacrifices. And the conspiracy grew strong, for the people with Absalom increased continually.
David Flees Jerusalem
13 Then a messenger came to David, saying, “The hearts of the men of Israel are with Absalom.” 14 David said to all his [b]servants who were with him at Jerusalem, “Arise, let us flee, or none of us will escape from Absalom! Go in haste, or he will overtake us quickly and bring disaster on us and strike the city with the edge of the sword.”

- 2 Samuel 15:12 Ahithophel, one of David’s wisest and most trusted advisers, was the father of Eliam, Bathsheba’s father. Ahithophel’s alliance with Absalom may have been an act of revenge motivated by David’s sin against his granddaughter and her murdered husband.
- 2 Samuel 15:14 This would have included various officials, guards, staff, and other members of David’s court and household.
